Maryville College Archivist Amy Lundell – Maryville Noonday Club – 8 May 2024
MARYVILLE COLLEGE’S FAYERWEATHER HALL –
HISTORY OF THE BUILDING AND THE 1999 FIREAs we near the 25th anniversary of the fire at Fayerweather Hall on the campus of Maryville College, our program will feature a history of the building and a personal story from the 1999 fire. Our guest speaker is Maryville College Archivist Amy Lundell. Amy is a third-generation alumna of Maryville College (class of 2006). She received her MA in History, emphasis in Public History, specializing in Archival Management and Administration from Middle Tennessee State University and received a Graduate Certificate in Digital Curation from the University of Maine. For nearly a decade, she worked as a contract archivist with the National Park Service at various parks around the country including Mammoth Cave National Park and Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In 2018, she was hired as the first professional archivist in Maryville College’s 200-year history. Amy will share the history of Fayerweather Hall, from its beginnings in the late 1800’s through today. Ron Appuhn (the last person in the building before the lightning struck) will follow Amy with his personal recollections from the times before, during, and after the fire. Spoiler alert – the story includes such things as a rhino head, China, emergency planning, lessons learned, family challenges, the campus master plan, insurance, the FBI, whispers, and Webb School of Knoxville.
